The video's audio is already AAC — why re-encode?

Most MP4s already carry AAC, so this re-wraps the track into a standalone M4A and re-encodes to 192 kbps AAC. A second AAC pass is effectively transparent, but it isn't bit-identical to the original stream.

Why choose M4A over MP3?

AAC inside an M4A is a bit more efficient than MP3 at the same bitrate and is the native audio format for iPhones, iTunes, and GarageBand. Pick MP3 instead when you need the widest possible compatibility.

Is an M4A the same thing as an MP4?

They use the same MPEG-4 container, but an .m4a holds only an audio track (AAC or ALAC) while an .mp4 usually carries video plus audio. Extracting to M4A drops the video track entirely, which is why the result is much smaller and opens in music apps as a track rather than a movie.

Will the M4A play on Android and Windows, or only on Apple devices?
