How to Make a Ringtone From Any Song
4 min read · Updated July 24, 2026
Making a custom ringtone used to mean GarageBand, file renaming, and a lot of fiddling. It doesn't anymore. Whether it's a chart song or a track you made yourself in Suno, you can turn it into a proper ringtone in about a minute — and get the right file format for your phone so it just works.
iPhone vs Android: the format matters
- iPhone needs an .m4r file, and ringtones are capped at 30 seconds.
- Android uses a normal .mp3 and you can set it straight from your files or ringtone settings.
This is where most tutorials go wrong — they give you an MP3 and then a fiddly renaming step for iPhone. The ringtone maker outputs the correct format directly, so there's no renaming and no GarageBand.
Make it
- Open the ringtone maker and drop in your song.
- Drag to pick where the hook starts — the bit you actually want to hear when your phone rings.
- Set the length (30 seconds max for iPhone) and turn on a fade-out so it ends cleanly instead of cutting off.
- Choose M4R for iPhone or MP3 for Android and download.
Getting it onto your phone
On iPhone, open the .m4r in your files, then use Settings › Sounds & Haptics to set it (older workflows go through GarageBand's Share › Ringtone, but the .m4r is ready either way). On Android, move the MP3 to your Ringtones folder or pick it directly in Settings › Sound › Phone ringtone.
Want just a clean clip without the ringtone-specific format? The MP3 cutter trims any section of a song, and the fade tool adds a smooth fade-in or fade-out on its own.
Frequently asked questions
How long can an iPhone ringtone be?
30 seconds maximum. The ringtone maker enforces this and exports the .m4r format iPhone expects, so there's no trial and error.
Do I need GarageBand to make an iPhone ringtone?
No. The tool exports a ready-to-use .m4r file directly. You just add it to your phone and select it in Settings — no GarageBand and no renaming.
Can I make a ringtone from my own Suno song?
Yes. Any MP3 or WAV works, including tracks you generated yourself. Pick the hook, set the length, and export.
