Does compressing lower the video quality?
Yes — compression is lossy, so re-encoding at a lower bitrate discards some detail, which tends to show up first as softer edges or blockiness in fast motion and smooth gradients. You can keep the loss minimal by choosing a lighter quality preset and holding the original resolution, then only pushing harder when a strict size limit forces it.
Can I make the file smaller without changing the resolution?
Yes. Lowering the quality (bitrate) preset while leaving resolution alone keeps the same pixel dimensions and simply spends fewer bits per frame, which is often enough on its own. Dropping resolution too — say 1080p down to 720p — is the bigger lever when you need a dramatic cut to hit a tight cap.
What if my video barely shrinks or won't load at all?
A clip that's already exported at a low bitrate has little redundant data left to remove, so a heavy preset may only trim it slightly — that's expected, not a failure. If a file won't load, it's usually an unusual codec your browser can't decode; re-exporting it as a standard MP4 first will let it through.
