A pitch shifter raises or lowers the frequency of everything in a track by a set number of semitones without touching its speed. That separation is the whole trick: older methods like varispeed or resampling change pitch and tempo together, so speeding a track up to raise it also shortens it and gives that sped-up, chipmunk quality. A dedicated pitch shifter uses time-stretching under the hood to hold the length and BPM steady while only the notes move.

FAQ

How many semitones is a key change?

Each semitone is one half-step: +2 takes C to D, -3 takes C to A. An octave is 12.

Why do big shifts sound odd?

Shifting more than ±5 semitones stretches the audio's character — vocals get noticeably synthetic. Small shifts stay natural.

Is pitch shifting the same as transposing a song?

Essentially yes, but from different angles. Transposing is the musical term for moving a piece to a new key by rewriting the notes; pitch shifting is what an audio tool does to reach that same result on a finished recording. Since you're working from a rendered Suno file and not a score, pitch shifting bends the actual audio, vocals and instruments together, rather than re-notating anything.

Does shifting the whole file move the vocals too?

Yes. This works on the mixed-down audio, so the lead vocal, backing, drums, and synths all move by the same number of semitones at once. If you only want to retune the voice, you'd have to separate that stem first, shift it on its own, and then recombine it with the untouched instrumental.

Does shifting up or down sound more natural?

Downward shifts are usually more forgiving because they keep the low end full, while upward shifts thin the bass and can make vocals sound tense or brittle as they climb. If a key is reachable from either direction, a small move down tends to hold together better than the same-sized move up.
