Album art lives inside the audio file itself, as a picture embedded in the metadata container — ID3 tags for MP3, MP4 atoms for M4A, and a picture block for FLAC. Music apps, car stereos, and phone lock screens all read the artwork from there, which is why a song without embedded art shows up as a gray placeholder no matter how nice the cover you posted elsewhere is. Neither iPhone nor Android ships a way to edit this, and desktop tag editors are a whole app install for a ten-second job.

FAQ
Does embedding artwork re-encode my audio?
No. The audio stream is copied byte-for-byte; only the file's metadata container changes. Quality is identical and the process takes a second or two.
What image should I use?
A square JPG or PNG. Most players display 600×600 and up well; 1400×1400 or larger is the safe choice for streaming-style artwork.
Why does my song show no artwork even though the site I downloaded it from had a cover?
The cover you saw was part of the web page, not the file. Artwork only displays in players when it's embedded inside the audio file's metadata — which is exactly what this tool does.
Does the artwork survive when I send the file over chat apps?
Yes, as long as the app sends the file itself (as a document/attachment) rather than re-compressing it as media. The art is part of the file, so wherever the file goes, the artwork goes.
Can I replace artwork that's already embedded?
Yes — the new image is written as the front cover. Most players show the newly embedded art; if an app caches the old thumbnail, removing and re-adding the file to its library refreshes it.
