Is M4A the same as Apple Lossless (ALAC)?

No — this outputs AAC, a lossy codec, inside an .m4a container. AAC at 192 kbps is transparent for most listeners, but keep your WAV as the master if you need true lossless.

Why pick M4A over MP3?

At the same bitrate AAC is slightly more efficient than MP3 and it's the native audio format across Apple devices. Choose MP3 only when you need maximum compatibility with older hardware.

How much smaller will the M4A be than my original WAV?

A lot smaller. A 3-minute stereo WAV runs around 30 MB, while the same track at 192 kbps AAC lands near 4 MB — roughly a tenth of the size. WAV stores every sample uncompressed, whereas AAC discards audio detail your ears don't register, which is where nearly all the savings come from.

Can I choose the AAC bitrate, or is it fixed at 192 kbps?

My WAV is 24-bit or 32-bit float — will it still convert?

Yes. The encoder reads high-bit-depth masters (24-bit, or 32-bit float exported from many DAWs) without complaint and re-encodes them to AAC. The extra bit depth simply isn't carried into the lossy AAC output, which is expected — keep the original WAV if you still need the full precision for further editing or mastering.
