ALAC — Apple Lossless Audio Codec — is Apple's own answer to FLAC: a lossless format that shrinks a WAV master by roughly 40–60% while keeping every original sample intact. The audio lives inside an .m4a container, the wrapper that iTunes, the macOS Music app, and iOS expect. FLAC does the same lossless job at comparable file sizes, but Apple has never wired it into the Music app or the Apple Music library, so a FLAC you want in that library either won't import or has to live in a separate player.

That gap is the whole reason to convert FLAC to ALAC. If you export a track from Suno as FLAC and want it in your Apple Music library — synced across devices, visible in the Music app, playable through AirPods without a side app — repacking it as ALAC is the step that makes that work. It's a lossless re-encode: the FLAC is unpacked to raw audio and re-packed as ALAC, so the samples that come back out are bit-for-bit identical to the source. Is any quality lost?

No — FLAC and ALAC are both lossless, so the decoded samples are identical. You're just moving the same audio into an Apple-native container, not re-compressing it.

Why ALAC instead of FLAC?

Apple's ecosystem (Apple Music, iTunes, iOS, macOS) plays ALAC natively but not FLAC. If you're not on Apple gear, FLAC is the more widely supported lossless format — only convert when you specifically need Apple compatibility.

Will the ALAC file be bigger or smaller than the FLAC?

Usually within a few percent of each other. FLAC and ALAC use different lossless algorithms but reach very similar compression, so a 300 MB FLAC album typically lands in roughly the same range as ALAC — often marginally larger, since FLAC tends to compress a touch more efficiently on average.

Can I play the ALAC file on Windows or Android?

Yes, though not as universally as FLAC. Apple open-sourced the ALAC codec in 2011, so players like VLC and foobar2000 on Windows and VLC or Poweramp on Android decode it fine. But some car head units, DAPs, and hardware players list FLAC and not ALAC, so if you're leaving Apple's ecosystem entirely, keeping the FLAC is the safer bet.

Will it stay truly lossless when I add it to Apple Music?

On the device where you import it, yes — the local .m4a stays lossless. But if you rely on Sync Library (iCloud Music Library) to push it to your other devices, Apple uploads unmatched tracks and serves them elsewhere as 256 kbps AAC, not lossless. To keep the real lossless copy on an iPhone, sync the file directly through Finder rather than depending on the cloud version.
