Why does it show half/double time?

Tempo is ambiguous — a 140 BPM track grooves identically at 70. If the number feels off, the half- or double-time reading is usually the one you want.

How accurate is it?

Steady electronic and pop tracks detect within ±1 BPM. Rubato, live drums, and ambient material without clear onsets can fool any detector.

Can I just tap along to find the tempo instead?

You can estimate BPM by tapping on the beat and averaging the interval between taps, and that's fine for a rough number. But your own timing jitter sets the error, and it drifts over a long tap. Reading the file's beat energy removes the human variance, which is why the detected number is usually steadier than tapping.

What audio formats can I load?

Anything your browser can decode, which commonly means MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A/AAC, and OGG. Decoding happens through the built-in Web Audio API, so supported formats track your browser rather than this tool, and the whole file stays on your device.

Why isn't my track's BPM a whole number?

Recorded, live, and AI-generated audio is rarely locked to an exact integer, so a reading like 119.7 is normal drift rather than an error. For a DAW grid, round to the nearest whole number and nudge from there. If the track actually speeds up or slows down across its length, no single BPM will fit the entire file.
